“UNIFIL peacekeepers have remained in their positions throughout the most difficult and dangerous phase of the hostilities, and I want to pay tribute to all of them, to the troop-contributing countries, to the men and women who steadfastly remained and faced very difficult dangers and threats. But they are still here; UNIFIL is still present everywhere in the different positions and fully committed to continuing in the delivery of the mandate.”

“The Maritime Task Force plays an important role in supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces, particularly the Lebanese Navy, in asserting control over the Lebanese territorial waters. And as the Lebanese Navy is gradually stepping up its capacity, then that supporting role is very important in making sure that there is actual surveillance over the Lebanese territorial waters. UNIFIL plays a critical role in enabling the implementation of Resolution 1701 in various ways, certainly by supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces as they are increasing their deployment in southern Lebanon and asserting the authority of the Lebanese government over that area. And in addition to that, UNIFIL plays an equally important role in liaising between the parties, between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces at a time where there still is presence of the Israel Defense Forces in Lebanese territory. UNIFIL colleagues are also making a lot of effort to support the population in their area of operation by helping to clear roads, to remove mines and explosive devices, and supporting the reconstruction effort. So, in many ways, UNIFIL is an active player in supporting not only Lebanon and the Lebanese people but also the efforts towards a durable lasting solution in the region.”

“UNIFIL peacekeepers have remained in their positions throughout the most difficult and dangerous phase of the hostilities,” said UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, as he wrapped up a three-day visit to Lebanon to assess the situation on the ground and reaffirm international support for the mission.
During his visit USG Lacroix met with UN peacekeepers in the south and held high-level talks with Lebanese authorities in Beirut.
In Naqoura, Lacroix was received by UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro. He reviewed the Guard of Honour and was briefed by mission leadership and peacekeepers, including at the UN position OP HIN in Marwahin and aboard the German ship of the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force.
In Beirut, Lacroix held a series of meetings with top Lebanese officials, including President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri. Discussions focused on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701, the ongoing security situation, and UNIFIL’s cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces.
He also met with Defense Minister Michel Menassa and General Security Chief Major General Hassan Choucair on the final day of the visit, reaffirming the UN’s continued support to Lebanon’s institutions and sovereignty.
