Storyline

The Secretary-General is “deeply regretting the decision by the United States,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said following Washington’s announcement of its withdrawal from UNESCO.

Speaking to reporters at UN Headquarters in New York, Dujarric referenced a statement issued earlier by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in which she expressed “deep regret” over the move.

Azoulay noted that in recent years, UNESCO had “stepped up efforts to take action wherever the agency’s mission could contribute to peace.”

“The Secretary-General joins her in deeply regretting the decision by the United States,” Dujarric added.
