Storyline

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban held a five-day mission to Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban visited the Dar Al Sabeel Desalination Plant and Al Helou Hospital in the Gaza Strip on Monday (28 Jul). He met with health workers and programme staff on the ground. The visit also offered an opportunity to hear from displaced individuals living in a northern camp to listen firsthand to the severe challenges they face and their most urgent needs.

On Tuesday (29 Jul), Chaiban visited Friends of the Patients Society Hospital in the Gaza Strip, meeting with injured and malnourished children and health workers on the ground. Tens of thousands of children have been injured in Gaza during the war. Hospitals are operating under extreme pressure, with a constant inflow of severely injured persons, severe shortages of medical supplies and fuel, and damaged infrastructure. UNICEF continues to support hospitals across Gaza with essential medical supplies, equipment, and fuel to help save lives and ensure that children receive the urgent care they need.

On Wednesday (30 Jul), the Deputy Executive Director visited Al Awsaj Bedouin community, east of Ramallah city in the West Bank. During his visit he met with community leaders and forcibly displaced families including children and women due to settler violence, benefiting from UNICEF’s emergency response including Water Trucking, Hygiene Kits Distribution and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities.
Later Chaiban observeed a general view from Augusta Victoria Hospital on the Mount of Olives in East Jerusalem, having a briefing on access restrictions and overlooking parts of the separation wall, checkpoints, area E1 the Jordan valley, and the nearby Shufat refugee camp in and around East Jerusalem.
