Storyline

In Chad, UNHCR is working with partners to ensure access to health information and safe water amid a Cholera outbreak affecting refugees from Sudan’s Darfur.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, urgently calls for an immediate injection of funds to scale up life-saving health, hygiene, water, shelter and nutrition support to avoid a health catastrophe.

Overcrowding in areas hosting the displaced, lack of clean water and limited health and sanitation facilities are accelerating transmission.

In Chad, UNHCR has suspended the relocation of refugees from the border to Dougui to prevent new cases of cholera. Handwashing stations are being set up, soap distributed, and latrines disinfected.

Medical supplies and personal protective equipment have been delivered to health facilities, and health workers have been trained to enhance identification and surveillance of cases.

Information on prevention and early treatment is also being provided across the settlements.

Despite rising needs, funding shortfalls are hindering response efforts both in Darfur and eastern Chad.
