Press Conference: Launch of the UN Secretary-General's report - The Security We Need: Rebalancing Military Spending for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future
Global military spending is rising significantly across all regions driven by escalating geopolitical tensions, conflicts and security threats.
In 2024 alone, the spending reached a record high of $2.7 trillion, representing a decade of continuous growth, yet global security continued to deteriorate and progress on the Sustainable Development Goals - the world’s blueprint for a fair and equal world - has
fallen short.
The UN Secretary-General’s forthcoming report, The Security We Need: Rebalancing Military Spending for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future, as requested by UN Member States in the 2024 Pact for the Future, will examine the impact of the global increase in military expenditure on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Speakers:
- UN Secretary-General António Guterres
- UN High Representative for Disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu
- Acting Administrator of the UN Development Programme Haoliang Xu
