“It’s about ensuring that young girls and boys can access reproductive health services—because when they do, there will be fewer early and unintended pregnancies. Girls will be able to stay in school longer and have greater opportunities for work. And when it comes to infrastructure programs, it’s also important to make sure that, in Côte d’Ivoire for example, while there are many roads, the health and education centers are equally developed and accessible.”

Côte d’Ivoire faces persistent challenges in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), with high maternal mortality, low contraceptive coverage, and a high rate of adolescent pregnancies. Nearly one in three women give birth without the support of a skilled health professional, and one in four women who wish to plan their fertility goals lack access to modern contraception.
At the same time, UNFPA’s partnership with the Government of Côte d’Ivoire has contributed to important gains, including a decline in maternal mortality from 614 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2012 to 385 in 2021, and an increase in the use of modern contraceptives from 12.5 percent to 18 percent over the same period. Building on this progress, UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, continues to work with Côte d’Ivoire to address the remaining gaps, ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
During her first official visit as UNFPA Executive Director and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Diene Keita reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to Côte d’Ivoire. She met with national and multilateral leaders including Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, the President of the African Development Bank Sidi Ould Tah, First Lady Dominique Ouattara, and several government ministers. These high-level meetings underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships and mobilizing resources to advance health and rights for women and young people in Côte d’Ivoire and across the region.
The Executive Director also visited three sites that highlight the impact of UNFPA’s work. At Institut National de Formation des Agents de Santé (INFAS), she saw how midwives are trained to serve across the country, often becoming the lifeline for mothers who lack access to skilled care. At Nouvelle Pharmacie de la Santé Publique (NPSP), a central warehouse that distributes life-saving medicines, contraceptives, and supplies across the country, she witnessed how strong supply chains safeguard women’s health. She was joined there by the newly appointed European Union Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Irchad Razaaly.
UNFPA remains committed to standing alongside the women and girls of Côte d’Ivoire. By supporting access to sexual and reproductive health care, preventing gender-based violence, and empowering young people, UNFPA works to ensure that women and girls are protected, their rights upheld, and their futures can thrive.
