US President Donald Trump told UN Secretary-General that his country is “behind the United Nations one hundred per cent.”
The US President met Tuesday (23 Sep) with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after his speech to the General Assembly High-Level Debate.
The American president also said that “the potential of the United Nations is incredible, really incredible. It can do so much.” He added, “I'm behind it. I may disagree with it sometimes, but I am so behind it because I think the potential for peace with this institution is so great.”
During the meeting, The UN chief said that the United States was absolutely essential in the founding of the United Nations, noting that for decades the UN relied on the US as a major financial and political supporter. Guterres said there are many areas where the UN and the US can cooperate.
The UN chief also said, “One thing is for me extremely important, it is that the suffering, the horrible suffering of millions of people in the world can be stopped. And we fully appreciate your engagement in that regard.”
