“Of course, our work in the Islamic Republic of Iran is extremely important. Since the last time we've met, we have continued our efforts, consultations with Iran, Ambassador, with your foreign minister, with others in Tehran, trying to restore the normalcy of our inspection work in the country. And I think there's there has been some movement, and I recognize that we have returned to Iran, and a number of inspections have taken place, more than a dozen by today.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“I believe this is the path we need to continue on. I continue to believe, and I continue to be convinced that there is no other solution but a diplomatic solution to this whole thing, and that requires engagement and understanding on our part and also full compliance on the part of Iran of its obligations. Lacking that, we will continue to stumble from problem into problem and not be in the place we all want to be.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“The situation in Ukraine continues continues to be very fragile. You have the corresponding report before you. I think it has been a very busy period through the mediation of the Agency and my own work and engagement at the highest levels with the two countries. I think we were able to mark an important point with the agreed temporary ceasefires that allowed for the indispensable repairs that needed to be done on the Dniprovska and Ferosplavna lines, which were finally and successfully completed.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“The only thing I can do is to have a dialogue with Iran. These facilities are in Iran, our Iranian facilities. So, what we are discussing, and we are trying to facilitate when requested some bilateral conversations they are having with the United States that may or may not be helpful in that regard. So, what we but basically, I come back to my earlier comment. Basically, this is between Iran and ourselves. What, how we do, what we need, what we indispensably need to do there.”

Storyline

“Our work in the Islamic Republic of Iran is extremely important,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told the Board of Governors on Tuesday, opening a briefing that underscored both modest progress and persistent diplomatic hurdles.

Grossi said the Agency had “continued our efforts, consultations with Iran … trying to restore the normalcy of our inspection work,” noting that inspectors had recently “returned to Iran, and a number of inspections have taken place, more than a dozen by today.” He acknowledged “some movement” in cooperation but stressed the need for further stabilization of monitoring activities.

Reiterating the Agency’s longstanding position, Grossi said, “I continue to believe, and I continue to be convinced that there is no other solution but a diplomatic solution,” adding that such an outcome requires “engagement and understanding on our part and also full compliance on the part of Iran.” Without that, he warned, “we will continue to stumble from problem into problem and not be in in the place we all want to be.”

Turning to Ukraine, Grossi described the situation as “very fragile,” pointing to “a very busy period through the mediation of the Agency” amid ongoing hostilities. He said recent “agreed temporary ceasefires” had allowed crews to carry out “the indispensable repairs that needed to be done on the Dniprovska and Ferosplavna lines,” which were “finally and successfully completed.”

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Grossi emphasized the limits of his mandate. “The only thing I can do is to have a dialogue with Iran,” he said.
