“I am currently in Dongola, which is the capital of Northern State. It's by the River Nile, and I've met with national authorities. I've met - as you can see from behind me - with local representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs, international NGOs and so forth. And what they are telling me is about the horrible plight that many people, many survivors of this horrific war, are going through every day.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR):
“They don't have enough settlements for those who got internally displaced, some of them many times. There’s no proper solution for the women who have suffered sexual violence because the space isn’t there. There is not enough attention paid to people with disabilities. But but these representatives have also found solutions. There needs to be an all-out effort, both within Sudan and by the international community, to help them and facilitate their work so that they can provide the much-needed humanitarian assistance that is required under the circumstances.”

Storyline

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk began his visit to Sudan on 14 January, Türk last conducted an official visit to Sudan in November 2022.

Sudan’s protracted conflict is a human rights and protection crisis, driven by widespread and persistent violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, and causing catastrophic civilian harm. The cumulative impact of these violations – including attacks on civilians, mass displacement, catastrophic hunger and the collapse of basic services – have undermined fundamental human rights.

During this visit, the UN Human Rights Chief met with authorities in Port Sudan, as well as civil society representatives and the UN Country Team.

The UN Human Rights Office in Sudan is monitoring and reporting on violations of international human rights law and humanitarian law, and working to strengthen the protection of civilians. It works to provide a clear evidence-base to ensure that protection, accountability, and the rights of affected populations remain central.

The High Commissioner today visited the capital of the Northern State, Dongola. He met with the Governor of the state as well as engaging with non-govermental organisations. With these humanitarian partners they exchanged on the challenges faced by and the needs of the people displaced by grave violence in Darfur and Kordofan regions.

Following the meeting attended by over 50 representatives, he made the following comment on the plight of Sudanese people who have been displaced multiple times in the past three years of this conflict.

“I am currently in Dongola, which is the capital of Northern State. It's by the River Nile, and I've met with national authorities. I've met, as you can see from behind me, with local representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs, international NGOs and so forth. And what they are telling me is about the horrible plight that many people, many survivors of this horrific war, are going through every day.

They don't have enough settlements for those who got internally displaced, some of them, many times. There’s no proper solution for the women who have suffered sexual violence because the space isn’t there. There is not enough attention paid to people with disabilities. But these representatives have also found solutions.

There needs to be an all-out effort, both within Sudan and by the international community, to help them and facilitate their work so that they can provide the much-needed humanitarian assistance that is required under the circumstances,” the High Commissioner said.

Volker Türk will be visiting these internally displaced people in the Al Afad gathering site.

He will return to Port Sudan on Sunday, 18 January 2026. He will hold two press conferences at the end of his visit – one in Port Sudan and another in Nairobi, Kenya.
