“Raw power is testing the resilience of multilateralism,” the UN Deputy Secretary-General warned on Wednesday, as the Economic and Social Council opened its 2026 Coordination Segment in New York.
Addressing the ECOSOC Chamber today (28 Jan) on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed said the world is facing a convergence of crises, from conflicts and widening inequalities to climate chaos and rapid technological change, at a critical moment for global cooperation.
The two-day Coordination Segment brings together Member States, UN system entities and ECOSOC subsidiary bodies to examine how the Council can strengthen coordination and deliver more effective policy guidance in support of the 2030 Agenda, as ECOSOC marks its 80th anniversary.
Mohammed said participants would hear from experts across the UN system and beyond on efforts to “deepen coherence, foresight, innovation and data-driven coordination across the ECOSOC system,” as preparations continue for the High-level Political Forum’s in-depth reviews of key Sustainable Development Goals.
With just a few years remaining to meet the 2030 deadline, she warned that “progress on many of the SDGs is alarmingly off track,” calling on governments and institutions to “double down and to deliver.”
She also welcomed upcoming General Assembly reviews of ECOSOC and the High-level Political Forum, saying they offer an opportunity to strengthen the Council’s deliberative work, increase its real-world impact and ensure it is “future-ready.”
Mohammed closed by urging renewed commitment to cooperation and shared responsibility, calling for action to make the vision of the 2030 Agenda a reality for all, with ECOSOC serving as a central pillar of multilateralism.
