“There's a lot of scientific knowledge also already out there, but it's very fragmented, and it's often not in the hands of those policymakers that can really make a difference to people's lives. For example, by ensuring that chemicals and waste are managed well and that pollution is prevented so that people are not exposed to harmful chemicals in their environment or contaminated water or otherwise faced by the impact of pollution. We have a new panel. It has the potential to live up to its ambition to really ensure that we have sound management of chemicals and waste and we can prevent pollution.”

The meeting marks a key step in operationalising the panel, with delegates agreeing rules of procedure, electing officers — including Chair Osvaldo Alvarez Pérez of Chile — and setting the Panel’s priorities.

Established by UNEA resolution 5/8, the ISP-CWP will deliver independent, policy-relevant science to address chemicals, waste and pollution as part of the global response to the triple planetary crisis.
