“Eid is normally a time of celebration for families across Lebanon. This year will not be the case. I'm in one of the collective shelters in Beirut, which are filled with families, young children, elderly parents and people with disabilities. For them, this year will not be any time to celebrate. They are living in very difficult conditions. There's been very heavy rain over the weekend. Additional families came into the overcrowded shelter during the rains. Several also came in after a series of bombings in central Beirut. Many of these new families are living in the playground or in the basement with no ventilation, no electricity and no running water.”

“People are finding dignity even amidst all the hardship. Unfpa is here distributing dignity kits and baby kits to families with young children. We are here with women and girls to ensure that they have the health and protection services that they need in the midst of all this turmoil. What we want to do is give people back the dignity that they're searching for, as well as give them some hope, even in the midst of all the devastation.”

Escalating attacks across Lebanon are causing the humanitarian situation there to deteriorate, triggering more than 1 million people to be internally displaced, hundreds of thousands of them in government-designated collective sites.
More than half of the displaced are female. Large-scale displacement and disruptions to health services are leaving women and girls without access to essential sexual and reproductive healthcare and protection services.
In Beirut, the Lebanese University’s Faculty of Pedagogy is currently hosting more than 650 displaced people who fled South Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Conditions at the shelter are dire: bathrooms are flooding, rooms are infested with mold, and newborns as young as four days old are living in these harsh environments.
Heavy weekend rains exacerbated the situation, causing further flooding and leaking ceilings.
UNFPA is scaling up its response to the growing needs.
UNFPA is on the front lines, deploying mobile health clinics to provide medical treatment to the displaced; running safe spaces for women and girls; and distributing thousands of dignity kits with essential hygiene and sanitation items for women and girls.
UNFPA has supported 19 health facilities, is deploying nine mobile medical units, and seven women and girls’ safe spaces.
UNFPA is urgently appealing for US $12 million to enable it to scale up and meet the needs of 225,000 people from March to May 2026.
To date, only US $1.5 million of the flash appeal has been mobilized, leaving significant gaps in the organization’s ability to procure and distribute equipment and supplies; and reach more women in need.
At the same time, the cost of delivery is sharply rising due to fuel costs, and supply disruptions across the region.
