Storyline

As insecurity persists in parts of Upper Nile, the activities of the United Nations Police (UNPOL) to help protect civilians and build community policing capacity remains critical.

United Nations Mission in South Sudan Police Commissioner, Meinolf Schlotmann, visited the region in the north of the country to assess the situation on the ground and the need for capacity building to strengthen security preparedness ahead of, and during, the first democratic elections since independence.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Meinolf Ludwig Schlotmann, UNMISS Police Commissioner: “We have a well-tailored plan for Upper Nile for the police development here, and it is necessary to talk here in Malakal with the responsible people and have an agreement to make arrangements for the police development right here on the spot.”

UNPOL supports the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) in preventing and responding to crimes, ensuring public order, and providing community policing to prevent violence across the country. Upper Nile Police Commissioner, General Louis Luak, stressed the importance of training programs for new recruits to enhance their skills and effectiveness as well as the rehabilitation of dilapidated justice infrastructure.

The Police Commissioner also met with the community watch group in the displacement camp to stress the importance of sharing information on local crime. Key to enhancing the safety of civilians at the former United Nations Protection of Civilians sites is also the establishment of new police posts.

Despite ongoing security risks and new fiscal constraints, United Nations police remain resolutely committed to doing their utmost to support protection efforts, the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, and building the professionalism of South Sudanese counterparts so they can provide better security for those they serve.
