“Seafarers and merchant vessels must never become collateral victims of geopolitical tensions,” the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization said.


Opening the Maritime Safety Committee's session in London today (13 May), Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization Arsenio Dominguez said, “The fundamental principles are clear and unquestionable: freedom of navigation must be respected; the safety of seafarers and ships must be ensured; and seafarers and merchant vessels must never become collateral victims of geopolitical tensions.”
He concluded, “These principles must translate into action.”


The Maritime Safety Committee is meeting from 13 to 22 May 2026.
