"Kurt Waldheim's 10 years at the helm covered a deeply challenging time in the world and in the life of our Organization. He needed to deploy every diplomatic and political skill acquired over a long career, including as Austria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. He led the Organization with prudence, perseverance, and precision."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced sadness today at the death of Kurt Waldheim, the former United Nations chief and Austrian President who has died at the age of 88.
After a minute of silence dedicated to the former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that Kurt Waldheim's 10 years at the helm covered a deeply challenging time in the world and in the life of the Organization. He added that he led the Organization "with prudence, perseverance, and precision."
He also took the opportunity to express his condolences to Mr. Waldheim's family, and to the people and Government of Austria, and paid tribute to him and to all his predecessors who had served in what has been called "the most impossible job on the earth."
Before his appointment as Secretary-General, Mr. Waldheim served in numerous senior political and diplomatic posts for Austria, including as Foreign Minister and two stints as Permanent Representative to the UN.
