Storyline

The election of a new head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) started today (26 March) with a secret ballot vote by the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors at the Agency's Vienna headquarters.

The two candidates for the post are Mr. Yukiya Amano of Japan and Mr. Abdul Samad Minty of South Africa. In order to be appointed, a candidate must secure two-thirds of the vote.

Three rounds of voting were held during a closed session of the Board this morning. In the first round, Amano won 21 votes and Minty 14. A second and third round each gave Amano 20 votes and Minty 15.

Chairperson Taous Feroukhi announced these results to the media afterwards, and concluded that the three rounds of voting did not lead to either candidate achieving the required two-thirds majority.

SOUNDBITE (English) Taous Feroukhi, Chairperson:
“We were not able at this stage to arrive to the nomination of the new DG, since for its nomination two third majority of the votes are required to be nominated as a DG.”

The chairperson said the Board of Governors would reconvene tomorrow in a closed session to take the next steps of the voting process required for the nomination of the new Director-General.

The current IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei´s term of office expires on 30 November 2009. He has served as Director General since 1997 and has stated that he is not available for a fourth term of office.
