Storyline

This may look like any Sunday afternoon fair in Indonesia, with music, junk food, enormous slides, but this is not a typical party in the park.

This Election Youth Festival in a downtown Jakarta stadium attracted roughly five thousand students between ages 17 and 22.

They came to meet and chat with some of the candidates running for office in 9 April elections. Twelve thousand candidates will run for Indonesia’s parliament followed by polls for the presidency in July.

With an estimated 15 million first time voters, civic education of these youth is a priority and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is helping with young voter civic education.

The youths have also come to the festival to run for office themselves in mock election, as part of an exercise to better understand the democratic process, with various schools competing against each other.

SOUNDBITE (Bahasa Indonesia) Seftya Aisyah Rosifa, 17-year-old participant of the Election Youth Festival:
“I am one of young people here. One of the reasons why I’m joining this event is because we want to prove that young people can participate in politics. We can show our appreciation as youth, the example the parties here.”

SOUNDBITE (Bahasa Indonesia) Youth at Festival:
“Of course we will vote because it is a right of Indonesian citizen to vote. I will vote according to my conscience.”

The different schools ran on a range of political issues that they think are important in the upcoming elections. At the top of their agendas was fighting corruption, and improving the education system.

UNDP voter information officer, Mariski Nirwan said they try and keep the youth entertained.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mariski Nirwan, UNDP voter information officer:
“The core activity is the school campaign, a form of edutainment: each school is its own political party with candidates, campaign staff etcetera to learn about the campaigning process and about how political work parties and what their function is.”

With more than 170 million eligible voters in the upcoming elections, getting voter information out is no easy feat. These festivals, public debates, door-to-door voter education, and public service announcements are all part of the UNDP work with the National Election Commission and local organizations to make sure that everyone has the information needed to exercise their right to vote.
