Storyline

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging a renewed commitment to free the world from landmines and explosive remnants of war, which continue to kill or injure thousands of people a year.

Mine action has helped reduce the annual number of new casualties from landmines and explosive remnants of war to about 5,500—down nearly 75 percent from a high of 26,000 in 1997.

But still the number of landmine survivors and victims is growing. Their needs are the focus of this year's International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, observed annually on 4 April.

UN officials say a conference in Colombia later this year to review the groundbreaking 1997 anti-personnel mine ban treaty, also known as the Ottawa Convention, will offer an opportunity for renewed momentum to tackle the scourge of landmines and build on the recent adoption of a new UN convention on cluster munitions.

In a statement on the occasion of Mine Action Day, the Secretary-General called for “concerted collective efforts on all fronts” to realize the goal of a mine-free world.

Over the past two decades, United Nations assistance in mine action has reached more than 50 countries and territories. Together with mine-affected countries and other organizations, the UN clears mines, educates people on mine risks, and destroys stockpiles.

Mine Action Day will be observed with events around the world. At UN headquarters in New York, a photography exhibition will open on the evening of Friday 3 April, featuring work by renowned photographers Gervasio Sanchez from Spain and Arne Hodalic from Slovenia on the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war on civilians in countries such as Afghanistan, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon and Sudan.
