Storyline

Just one day after international donors pledged 324 million dollars to Haiti, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Port-au-Prince to meet with Haitian President Rene Preval.

On Tuesday, Clinton announced that the United States would give US$57 million in aid to rebuild infrastructure, create jobs, and fight drug trafficking.

Her visit highlights the US and international community’s commitment to help the troubled country, still reeling from food riots and devastating hurricanes in 2008.

SOUNDBITE (French) Rene Preval, President of Haiti:
“Haiti must continue to rely on foreign aid which contributes about 60 percent of our budget.”

SOUNDBITE (English) Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, United States:
“Haiti deserves our help. Haiti was on the right track making progress that everyone marked on. We have no control over the weather. Four hurricanes in one year were devastating. It would be enough for any country. It knocked Haiti off track and we now have to help Haiti get back on

Clinton has called on international donors to “re-ignite Hait’s path to progress”. Development experts believe that rebuilding infrastructure and increasing industrial capacity could help break the country’s cycle of poverty.

With UN peacekeepers in Haiti since 2004, security is much improved. UN Chief Hedi Annabi met with Secretary Clinton to discuss how economic development is critical to keeping the peace.

SOUNDBITE (English) Hedi Annabi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti and Chief of MINUSTAH:
“Everything we have achieved in terms of security and stability would only be durable if it is accompanied by progress in the living standards of the population, by job creation.”

A significant part of US aid money will go to creating jobs in Haiti’s industrial sector, as part of the HOPE II trade accords with the United States. The new legislation offers Haiti duty-free, quota-free access to US markets for the next nine years.
