Storyline

Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou today (16 April) visited the United Nations in New York to meet with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the process of negotiations between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which began in September last year with a view to finding a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus.

The United Nations envoy, former Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer, yesterday urged the Greek and Turkish Cypriots to seize the opportunity offered by talks to reunite their island but said time was working against a deal.

The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has been in place on the island since 1964 after the outbreak of inter-communal violence. It is tasked with preventing a recurrence of fighting, contributing to a return to normal conditions and the maintenance of law and order.
