2. Wide shot, dais
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Christie Brinkley, GSI Board Member:
“I am not an expert in politics, treaties or international law, but I’d like to think that I am an expert in being a caring mother and there are several other billion such experts out there. And I believe I speak in unison with their hearts as well when I say the Cold War is over, let’s not pass on the legacy of these horrific devices to our children.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Christie Brinkley, GSI Board Member:
“Can we rid ourselves of the threat posed by nuclear weapons by saying: they can be held responsibly, reliably and dare I quote our military planners by saying ‘safely by some and not by others’? Can we prevent their spread while we rely on them? Can you convince your children not to smoke while you’re puffing on a cigar?”
6. Wide shot, audience applauding
SOUNDBITE (English) Hideo Iraoka, Member of the Japanese Diet:
“We were just very pleased to hear US President Obama in his Prague speech acknowledge the US nuclear bombing of Japan and indicate therefore that the United States has a moral responsibility to take the lead in achieving a nuclear weapon free world. The parliamentarians in Japan and around the world are ready to work with President Obama and other leaders to realize this goal.”

Storyline

A panel of distinguished international figures – including model, philanthropist and Global Security Institute (GSI) board member Christie Brinkley, and Gareth Evans, the Co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament – discussed today (6 May) a variety of initiatives and approaches aimed at eliminating nuclear weapons.

The special panel event was co-sponsored by the Government of Austria and the Middle Powers Initiative and is part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) meeting, where the world’s top diplomats and experts are gathering to work on strengthening the NPT.

Brinkley said that “the Cold War is over” and “the legacy of these horrific devices” should not be passed on to the next generation.

She said that preventing nuclear proliferation by allowing only certain states to possess them was akin to trying to convince children not to smoke “while you’re puffing on a cigar.”

The Secretary of the Democratic Party of Japan Nuclear Disarmament Group, Hideo Iraoka, welcomed US President Barack Obama’s push toward reducing and eventually eliminating nuclear weapons and said that “the United States has a moral responsibility to take the lead in achieving a nuclear weapon free world”.

Meanwhile, dozens of mayors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki presented a stack of boxes with nearly 500,000 signatures and a progress report to UN High Representative Sergio Duarte. The report is a proposed protocol complementary to the NPT, which envisions a nuclear-weapon-free world by 2020.

Mayors for Peace, a global network of 2,870 cities in 134 countries and regions, will be lobbying UN diplomats during the NPT Preparatory Committee starting at UN headquarters in New York on Monday.

Christie Brinkley has been an internationally-celebrated and respected model, author, spokesperson, businesswoman, activist, and philanthropist for over thirty years. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the Global Security Institute, she is also a founding board member of STAR (Standing for Truth about Radiation) and was instrumental in closing two nuclear reactors at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
