“The most important aspect, cornerstone from our point of view is the introduction of international policing/peacekeeping forces in the occupied territories as the most effective tool to reach the security and stability of Georgia both in the occupied territories and in the rest of Georgia to protect citizens inside the occupied territories and give a chance to the peace process to move forward without threats of violence, without immediate allegations of threats, which are used now to hamper the whole peace process”.

5. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Grigory Karasin, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs:
“You know Russia’s basic position very well, which is that as a matter of principle we will only discuss questions of security and life of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with the participation of representatives of these two countries. We will not discuss anything serious without them, this was made clear at the first Geneva meeting last October. We have stuck to this position and we will stick to it.”

Storyline

Russia and Georgia today (19 May) resumed security talks in Geneva following a walkout yesterday by the Russian delegation, and agreed to meet again in Geneva on the first of July to continue the talks aimed at restoring stability in the region following the conflict between the two countries in August last year.

Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Georgia’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgi Bokeria cited initial discussions on the deployment of peacekeepers among the positive developments in this week's talks.

Russia's delegation leader, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Grigory Karasin said his delegation had left the talks in line with its position that it would not discuss questions relating to Abkazia and South Ossetia in their absence.
