Storyline

Close to two million Pakistanis are now displaced by conflict in the north-west of the country. Three quarters of them were newly displaced this month.

UNICEF Regional Director Dan Toole recently visited Jalala Camp, one of the camps where the displaced are being registered.

11,000 people are living here, dependent on UNICEF and partners for clean water and sanitation. Half of the displaced are children, their lives upended, their education interrupted.

Along with school supplies and recreational kits, UNICEF is providing psychosocial support and protection teams to monitor unaccompanied and orphaned children.

The government of Pakistan and UNICEF have launched appeals for aid from international donors to provide for these children and prevent a deeper humanitarian crisis.
