Storyline

The World Food Programme (WFP) is streaming critically needed food assistance to the more than two million displaced persons fleeing renewed fighting in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the total number of displaced persons registered since early this month has reached over 2.38 million. UNHCR says that on average, an estimated 126,000 people a day are being registered. Many more people are still reported to be stranded in the conflict zones.

As of last week, WFP had distributed monthly food rations to more than 1.1 million registered internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled renewed fighting in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province. WFP expects to reach 1.6 million IDPs by the end of May.

WFP is leading the United Nations and humanitarian agencies in a new and innovative approach to bringing food, shelter and relief aid to internally displaced people (IDPs) by establishing humanitarian hubs in safe areas and host communities.

As established IDP camps near Peshawar have rapidly become overcrowded, WFP in cooperation with the government of Pakistan has worked to promote IDP settlements in alternative safe and protected areas, through established host communities. An estimated 80 percent of new IDPs are now settled in host communities rather than in traditional IDP camps.

WFP has now established 17 humanitarian hubs in the receiving districts and a Joint Logistics Base in Peshawar. The number of hubs will reach 22 by the end of May. WFP now has the distribution capacity to provide food for more than 100,000 displaced persons each day – reaching families and persons across a wide number of often remote host communities and resettlement camps.
