“After the visit of President Obama to the Middle East, especially after his speech in Cairo, the day after tomorrow, it will give a positive signal to all side in the Middle East to sit back to the table and to resume the negotiations one with each other, and I’m sure if the Palestinians will be willing to do so they will find us as a real partner towards the peace.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Silvan Shalom, Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Regional Development, Israel:
“We have said very clearly we are not going to build new settlements or to expand settlements. But there is natural growth. Natural growth is needed because when parents there are having new babies they need more kindergartens, they need more baby health cares and more classrooms; and you have to know that sometimes the length between one settlement to another is 50 kilometers, 70 kilometers. You can’t send them to kindergarten there. So it’s needed and that’s something that should be understood, and it would be given them because they have to manage their lives there. But it doesn’t say that we are not taking under account into our consideration, of course, some views of the Americans and the international community and we will do it together in order to find out a real solution to the issue of the settlements.”

Storyline

Israel’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Regional Development, Silvan Shalom visited the United Nations today (2 June) and met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Shalom said he had talks with Ban Ki-moon covering issues that ranged from North Korea to Iran.

The minister told journalists that United States President Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo on Thursday would give a positive signal to all sides in the Middle East to “sit back to the table and to resume the negotiations”.

Shalom said he was “sure” that if the Palestinians were willing to do so, “they will find us as a real partner towards the peace.”

With reference to the settlements he said that the Israeli government had already made it clear that they were not going to build or expand new settlements But, he said there was the issue of “natural growth”, where parents living in the settlements needed more kindergartens, health cares centers and classrooms for their children, and the distance between settlements was too big to send children there. He said that that was needed and “that’s something that should be understood”. But, he added that that didn’t mean that Israel was not taking into consideration the views of the US and the international community.
