“When the time for delivery is near we tell them to come to us. There are no services for safe delivery in this camp because the environment is not very clean. So we refer these women to the local hospital for safe delivery.”

Storyline

Millions of people are displaced by the conflict in northern Pakistan. The upheaval has been violent and swift … and especially terrifying for pregnant women.

Azra Farooq has arrived at the the UNICEF-supported health unit at Sheikh Yasin camp just in time—she is due to give birth any day. And she’s worried about her child’s safety.

SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Azra Farooq, Expectant Mother:
“I arrived here in a terrible state. They gave me a check-up and medicines I needed. They did my check-up well.”

There are around four hundred pregnant women in this camp, and the health centre is one of four in camps that are treating about eleven hundred women.

Mehr-un-Nisa was forced to leave her home at a critical moment.

SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Mehr-un-Nisa, Mother:

Thanks to professional help her baby is now fourteen days old and thriving.

Most of the people displaced by the fighting in northern Pakistan are women and children and they often arrive in the camps traumatized and in poor health.
Needs are growing by the day and UNICEF is seeking funds to expand life saving services not just to those living in camps, but to those who are staying with friends and relatives.
