Storyline

Ambassador Ali Abdessalam Treki of the Libyan Arab Jamahirija was elected today at the United Nations as president of the 64th session of the General Assembly (GA).

Treky, who had in the past served as Libya's foreign minister and later as the country's UN envoy, was elected by acclamation at a plenary meeting of G.A.

In his acceptance speech, Treki said that it was imperative for the member states to “stand fairly for the realization of human rights such an undertaking cannot be achieved by rhetorical statements alone, but through the provision of the basic necessities for a dignified life.”

UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon congratulated Treki, who had served three times as Libya's UN ambassador, mostly recently in 2003. Ban said that Treki’s other diplomatic assignments had placed him at the heart of the UN's agenda.

Treky's candidacy was supported by the 53-nation African Union, which was currently chaired by Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi.
