The UN’s top peacekeeping official Alain Le Roy arrived on Wednesday (10 June) evening in Abidjan for his first visit to Cote d’Ivoire as Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.
Le Roy’s four-day visit is intended to assess the progress achieved by the UN Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (ONUCI) since a major political agreement was signed in 2007 in Ouagadougou by the main actors of the seven year long crisis in Cote d’Ivoire.

Le Roy is also going to see how the mission can better assist Ivorian people in the forthcoming election on 29 November 2009, which has been delayed for four years over identification and disarmament issues.

In Abidjan the Under-Secretary-General today (11 June) met with the Special Representative of the Facilitator of the Ougadougou Accord, Bureima Badini and the leader of the RDR opposition party Alassane Outtara.
Over the next three days, he is expected to meet with President Laurent Gbagbo, Prime Minister Guillaume Soro and the Facilitator President of Burkina Faso Blaise Compaore.
This will lead him to Yamoussoukro, Bouake and Ouagadougou, before meeting with a delegation of the United Nations Mission in Liberia at the Liberian border.
In addition to Côte d’Ivoire, Le Roy’s ten-day trip to West Africa will take him to Burkina Faso, Liberia, Mali and Nigeria, where he will meet with government officials and local authorities.
