Storyline

Warm colors of beaded artwork crafted by refugees and traditional Ethiopian coffee being brewed by other refugees living in Sudan were some of the attractions at this year’s World Refugee Day reflecting the theme “real people, real needs.”
A solitary bagpipe and different groups of singers - both young and old - also provided entertainment at this year’s June 20th event which was celebrated Khartoum’s National Museum. Revelers also had a chance to look at exhibitions and photos reflecting the lives of various refugee populations.
Sudan is host to an estimated 185,000 Eritrean refugees, 16,500 refugees from neighbouring Ethiopia and several thousand more from other countries in the region.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr Mohamed Ahmed Al Aghbash, Commissioner for Refugees:
“We need to all know that Refugees are real people with the real needs, and we have to work together for the provision of all their needs and to return them back home in a respectful manner.”

SOUNDBITE (English) Craig Sanders, UNHCR Representative:
“UNHCR has worked side by side with the government and the people of this country for over 40 years. Together we can point to some important achievements perhaps most notable in recent years is the return of a third of a million of people since the signing of the CPA.”
After the speeches, a group of Ethiopian and Eritrean refugee students danced away in stage show which ended in tragedy - reflective of their lives. Once living happily and with no problems, shooting suddenly broke out and the play unfolded showing deaths, injuries and a displaced population living in a refugee camp which was modeled out of cardboard boxes. The play went on showing each of the ‘refugees’ demonstrating and asking for basic needs and recognition.
SOUNDBITE (English) Tewodros Tegegne, Ethiopian Refugee Student:
“I was holding self-confidence - and every body should have self confidence if there is problem every body should self-confident so that he can overcome every difficulties he may face, we have to dream also that tomorrow will been better.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Feven Gerensae, Eritrean Refugee Student:
“Geographically we are different - some are Eritrea, Ethiopian, Sudanese but we are all from one nation. If we can only become one people, with one purpose, one nation everything will totally change.”
The evening celebrations ended with a famed Eritrean singer Khadija Idris singing to dancing crowds.
