"For the remainder of this year, from now until the end of this year, it is our estimate that we may need at least one billion dollars. The funding has not been flowing as we have been expecting. When I had a meeting with CEO's of pharmaceutical companies in May, they were committed to manufacture and provide vaccines. Now the first vaccines may be available during the month of August. So that is fine, but we need to get more resources available."

Storyline

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said today (6 July) expressed regret at the death of civilians in Honduras at a demonstration by supporters of ousted President Manuel Zelaya at Tegucigalpa airport.

Ban told a news conference in Geneva that all countries, including Honduras, should protect their citizens and allow them to demonstrate without threats of physical force. He reiterated an earlier statement calling for the reinstatement of Zelaya and added that an elected leader's authority and mandate should be protected and an “unconstitutional change of power is not acceptable."

Speaking about the H1N1 influenza pandemic, the Secretary-General said that a billion dollars are needed by the end of the year to provide vaccines against the virus to poor countries.

Ban said that the first vaccines should be available next month but expressed concern that funding for those who can’t afford them hasn't been forthcoming. He stressed that “we need to get more resources available."

Later in the afternoon the Secretary General and World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan met representatives of major donor countries at to call for more funding to help poor countries buy vaccines against the H1N1 virus.

Latest WHO figures put the number of flu cases throughout the world in the region of 94,500, with 429 confirmed deaths.

UN System Influenza Coordinator Dr David Nabarro and World Bank Vice President Joy Humph also attended the meeting with donors.
