Storyline

On the eve of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (9 August) NBA Star Player and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Manu Ginobili visited a school in Fontana in the impoverished province of Chaco, home to the indigenous group Qom.

For Qom students the educational challenge is vast. They begin school without knowledge of the Spanish language and during their education they receive no instruction in their mother tongue.

During his visit to the school, Ginóbili took part in a language class with the children and emphasized the importance of sport as a powerful tool for child development.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Manu Ginobili, Goodwill Ambassador, UNICEF:
“I wanted to be a basketball player and that’s why I dedicated so much time and effort. I would arrive home from school, do all my homework and then rush to the court to train.”

Ginóbili is promoting the “Cities for Education” initiative, which promotes the right of all children and adolescents to complete their studies. With the help of UNICEF and local partners, the initiative provides training for teachers on successful teaching methods

Ginóbili also visited a centre for the promotion of rights in the Cacique Pelayo neighborhood, where Qom women spoke about the importance of having a space to learn new skills and know more about their rights.

With this initiative, “Cities for Education” provides cultural activities and helps schools assist children who suffer from malnutrition, violence and abuse.
