“And so this hospital is an example of what a health care system could look like, if it were properly implemented throughout the country. And could help to save so many lives, whether it’s the children who are dying of largely preventable causes – over half a million children die here every year, who are under the age of five, of largely preventable causes, like malaria and diarrhea and pneumonia, and malnutrition – it shouldn’t happen.”

“I want to create a model of excellence, a centre of excellence. I want to create one of the top research centers on the African continent, where large pharmaceutical companies from around the world can come, do their work and do their research here. Right now we have a BD [Becton, Dickinson and Company] partnership; we have UNICEF, the World Health Organization.”

On the edge of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital offers hope. A state of the art medical facility founded in 2007 by basketball legend Dikembe Mutombo, the hospital provides healthcare in a country where the medical system has largely collapsed.
This week, at a ceremony attended by Mutombo and UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, Mutombo Hospital launched two new centers to improve treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS.
SOUNDBITE (English) Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director:
“And so this hospital is an example of what a health care system could look like, if it were properly implemented throughout the country. And could help to save so many lives, whether it’s the children who are dying of largely preventable causes – over half a million children die here every year, who are under the age of five, of largely preventable causes, like malaria and diarrhea and pneumonia, and malnutrition – it shouldn’t happen.”
With the help of the American-based medical technology company Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) the hospital’s staff will receive a range of safety-engineered injection blood collection devices as well as laboratory and occupational safety training.
And the legendary Congo-born athlete who made it possible is not stopping yet:

In a country where five million people have died in the past decade of war, hunger and disease, it is an ambitious dream.
