“The prospects for reducing nuclear arsenals are better than they have been for years, though the road ahead will not be easy. It may be difficult for you to imagine me growing up in a world with no Internet. I hope that someday, your children will have trouble imagining what it was like to live in a world that could be annihilated at any moment by nuclear weapons. On this International Day of Peace, let's pledge to keep pushing, together, for a nuclear-weapon-free world.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (18 September) called on nations to intensify efforts to reduce stockpiles of weapons capable of inflicting large-scale devastation and death, as the United Nations observed the annual International Day of Peace.

At the event carried out in the UN’s Rose Garden, the Secretary-General was accompanied by his wife Yoo Soon-taek, the President of the United Nations 65th General Assembly Ali Abdussalam Treki, and UN Messenger of Peace Jane Goodall among others.

Ban noted that this annual observance was a global call for ceasefire and non-violence. He added that it was a time to reflect on the “horror and cost of war, and on our duty to resolve disputes peacefully”.

Following the observance of a minute of silence and traditional ringing of the Peace Bell, and the release of peace doves into the New York skyline, Ban underscored his message at a gathering of students and teachers at UN Headquarters. He noted that he sent messages on Twitter to involve the whole world in the campaign to eliminate weapons of mass destruction.

Ban said that the prospects for reducing nuclear arsenals were better than they had been for years, “though the road ahead will not be easy”.

The International Day of Peace (21 September) was first established by the General Assembly in 1981 as an opportunity for people around the world to promote the resolution of conflict and to observe a cessation of hostilities. Events at UN headquarters took place today because this year’s Peace Day falls on an official UN Holiday.
