Mehmet Ataman makes top-of-the-line hospital equipment: Trolleys, food carts, things with wheels. He named his company Tautmann, because he thinks it has a global ring to it.
Right now, he sells most of his product inside Turkey, but he hopes, soon, to export at least half of what he makes. He’s about to ship 15 trolleys to the United Arab Emirates.

“Hopefully within three years, I think we will reach what we’re looking for right now. [Interviewer: “Which is what?”] Which is to be one of the main players in all the world.”
Farther north in Tekirdag, a town outside Istanbul, the Vastas company makes industrial valves. The valves are used in the pipelines that move precious liquids like oil, natural gas and water across countries and continents.
Vastas got a long-term loan from the World Bank, via the Turkish Development Bank, and is expanding its export business to Egypt, Iran and Colombia.
Nedim Ergin runs the company.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Nedim Ergin, Turkish entrepreneur:
“If we had gotten a better loan twenty years ago, maybe we could’ve gotten to where we are faster. But things happened; we also lost a lot of time because of other things, including crises.”
Coskon Kanberoglu says that for Turkish banks like his, investing in companies like Vastas makes economic sense.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Coskon Kanberoglu, Turkish Industrial Development Bank:
“Bear in mind the geographical location of Turkey, Turkey is surrounded by countries with important oil and gas reserves and important natural resources. So that made us realize that firms like this would be important in Turkey’s development.”
For Turkey, companies like Tautmann and Vastas represent stability, new jobs, and growth, and a link to the world economy.
And the loans can be targeted toward businesses in the less developed east, south and center of Turkey…..helping to build success throughout the country.
