It’s very difficult especially on the children and all of the families because they suffer so much and they have worked so hard for what they have. And so our sincere condolences to everyone and we hope that with hard work and chipping in from everyone that people can rebuild quickly.”

Storyline

Tropical Storm Ondoy brought floodwaters of more than three feet to Santa Cruz village in greater Manila and residents are struggling to get their lives back to normal.

UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Venemen visited Liberato Damian public school where some classes have resumed.

Veneman brought books, just one component of the massive aid operation that UNICEF has launched to ensure that flood victims get essential services.

“It’s a very difficult situation but I’m very pleased to see that the school is beginning to come back because it’s very important for children to get back into school because it brining a sense of normalcy back into their lives.”

Upstairs from classes, the school is home to families whose houses are still too flooded for them to live in.

UNICEF has provided essential supplies and while she was in the Philippines, Veneman announced that the UN is asking for 75 million dollars to provide further help to those in need.
