The cast and crew of the ABC TV comedy series Ugly Betty filmed scenes at United Nations Headquarters recently for its season premiere episode, slated to be aired on 16 October.
Scenes were filmed on the nights of 19 and 20 August, in and near the ECOSOC Chamber, for a storyline featuring the United Nations Foundation’s “Nothing but Nets” scheme to combat Malaria.
In the storyline, the show’s main character, Betty Suarez, in an effort to bring more substance to MODE, the fictional fashion magazine where she works, creates a fashion spread to highlight the use of bed nets for preventing malaria. Staging a magazine shoot in ECOSOC, Betty showcases models wearing fashionable forms of mosquito netting as a way of drawing attention to “Nothing but Nets”.
Honduran-American, Golden Globe-winning actress America Ferrera, who plays Betty described the shenanigans saying “there are some punches being thrown, big insects in the room, and models kind of going at each other, physically fighting. So, there is a lot of fighting going on in the UN, and someone has to go, so, it’s Betty, Betty gets kicked out of the UN.”
Grammy and Emmy-nominated actress Vanessa Williams, who plays the magazine Director, took part in a scene that recreated Nikita Khrushchev’s famous shoe-banging display of anger at the UN, only that, she said, “instead of a man’s shoe I am pounding my gold Lois Vuitton”.
Williams added that “it’s really an honor” to shoot at the UN, and “off course we are bringing the drama with Ugly Betty all the way to the UN.”
Adrianna Logalbo, Director of the “Nothing but Nets” campaign explained that “Malaria is killing a child every thirty seconds in Africa” but it is a preventable disease that can be curtailed by using insecticide treated bednets. She added that “for just ten dollars we can send a net and save a life”.
Malaria infects more than 500 million people around the world each year, killing more than 1 million. Bed nets prevent malaria transmission by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur
Eric Falt of the UN Department of Public Information welcomed Ugly Betty to the UN, “the first television sitcom to be shot here at the United Nations” and said that “it is indeed a very special night.”
The Ugly Betty season premiere, shot partially on location at United Nations Headquarters under the auspices of the recently launched Creative Community Outreach Initiative will air on ABC on Friday, 16 October 2009, at 8:00–10:00 p.m. (EDT).
