“The children here in this particular village of Poutasi have had to go to another school because their school was destroyed here and so they have been displaced. As a result they are traveling up to five kilometers away, a day, each way. They are facing over crowding in the other school where they are joining up with other students from the existing host schools. Teachers have had to cope with additional students with lack of facilities such as adequate water and sanitation facilities.”

Storyline

Falealili Secondary School was one of five schools destroyed in the tsunami that hit southern Samoa late last month.

UNICEF is working with the Samoan government to ensure that students resume their education as soon as possible.

The storm has affected almost eleven hundred children; and as well as providing them with temporary learning spaces and school equipment, UNICEF is also working to ensure that children have safe water, sanitary toilet facilities and first aid kits.
