“In the elections we are going to vote for people who can bring for us change because we have been suffering here for long time. Since God created us or this country we are in suffering. There is no good leadership in our country, there is no good administration, we have died a lot so we need to abolish all those things that was happening in the past. There is slavery in this country there is cheating and with this elections we can bring change.”

“The United Nations in Sudan has just embarked on one of the large distributions of voter registration materials in any where in the world. The United Nations Development Program and the UN peacekeeping operations in Sudan, UNMIS, will together be distributing more than one hundred and twenty thousand kilos of registration materials.”

Voter registration for Sudan’s first presidential and legislative elections in nearly a quarter of a century, due to be held in April, kicked off on Sunday (1 November).
The general elections will be the first in Sudan since 1986, three years before President Omar Al-Bashir toppled a democratically elected government in a bloodless military coup.
Addressing the Southern Sudanese from his office in Juba on the eve of the registration day, Southern Sudanese President Salva Kiir called on all people of voting age to be registered to vote and called upon all State Governors County Commissioners to mobilize the people to register and facilitate the work of the National Election Commission.

The President urged all the people of voting age eighteen and above in all parts of Southern Sudan to take this exercise very seriously by registering to vote. He extended a special call on women and youth who, he said, are the strong pillars of democratic institutions.
Peter Santino lives in suburb of Juba called Hai Seminary. He was among the first to register, for him voting means bringing change to the way people used to live in the past.

Susana is 24 years old and a mother of two. This is the first time she is going to vote.

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) are kicking off the largest-ever delivery of voter registration materials in dozens of inaccessible and remote locations in Southern Sudan.

The materials – including registration kits, forms and training supplies – will be sent to locations identified by the National Elections Commission (NEC).
