Storyline

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) went to the Kiwanja IDP (Internally Displaced People) camp in North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) over the weekend to carry out an evaluation and assessment exercise to find the exact number of IDPs living in the camp. It is estimated that more than 7,000 internally displaced people are living there.

Armed with torches, spray and identification ink, the data collecting officials went from hut to hut counting and registering the residents. Security was provided by MONUC’s Indian Brigade, the Congolese army (FARDC) and the Congolese national police (PNC).

The registration exercise was conducted during the night so that officials could find real statistics of the people who actually live and sleep in the camp.

The operation enables UNHCR to plan for supplies and to provide the appropriate number of humanitarian staff in the North Kivu region. The exercise was organized by UNHCR, United Nations technical support (UNOPS) and other humanitarian agencies.

North Kivu hosts an estimated 980,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) – more than any other province in the strife-torn nation. UN agencies and over 70 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are operating in the province to deliver much-needed assistance.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), aid workers in the area currently able to reach at least 70 percent of those in need.

Numerous waves of fighting over the years have produced around 2.2 million IDPs in DRC. An estimated 1.7 million people remain displaced in the provinces of North and South Kivu, with more than 400,000 persons having fled their homes since the beginning of the year.
