3. SOUNDBITE (French) Pierre Morel, European Union Special Representative:
“We are moving forward step by step, subject by subject, moving from the bottom up, starting with basic necessities, moving to more general issues, and the mechanisms that we started more than 6 months ago are starting to provoke their effects, the non use of force, the security, the upward curve is quite clear. In the Geneva discussions, the process is gradually moving forward.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Grigory Karasin, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Head of delegation:
“Now we’re talking of the detained teenagers and the circumstances of their presence in South Ossetia is being clarified. I think we have no serious reason to be concerned for their fate if they were with their relatives and were not doing anything illegal, and especially if they had no terrorist intentions, although some of the information we have received is that some had grenades and other things to show that they were not simply there for nothing."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Giorgi Bokeria, First Deputy Foreign Minister, Georgia: "Sixteen Georgian Citizens have been detained. Now the children and the parents of one who lives in the occupied territories, in the territory controlled by Russia. So this is a huge problem and we’ll do our best to highlight this issue at all forums where we can, and just to remind everyone that this is the responsibility of Russia, as an occupying power, as a power who has an effective control, and as a power whose special forces have implemented the detention of those kids and other citizens of Georgia.”

The 8th round of the talks between Russia and Georgia have been taking place in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, The European Union and the OSCE.
The talks aimed at restoring stability in the region following the conflict between the two countries in August last year. All participants met in two parallel working groups to discuss security and stability in the region and humanitarian matters. The three co- chairs of the meeting said the discussions had proceeded well. The next round of the meeting will be held on 28th January 2010.
The Co-Chairs of the Geneva discussions expressed concerns about a number of recent detentions. There have been a number of brief detentions of Georgians in recent weeks, mainly in rebel South Ossetia -- the focus of last year's five-day war between Georgia and Russia. South Ossetian authorities are holding four Georgian teenagers arrested last week in the breakaway capital Tskhinvali and accused of carrying grenades and other explosive material.
Mr. Morel, making a few general observations of his own, said the first dynamics of the Geneva Discussions which were established over the past year were continuing to develop and grow. They were moving forward, step by step, subject by subject, bottom up. The upward curve was quite clear and the process was gradually moving forward.
