United Nations staff participated in a candle-light vigil to honor the thousands of victims of the Haiti earthquake today. The vigil was held close to the UN headquarters in New York City.
There are as many as 330 UN staff who are still unaccounted for in Haiti. There were about 12,000 staff working for various UN agencies such UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Porgramme (WFP), World Health Organization as well as for the UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSTAH).
Alain Leroy, Head of Peacekeeping, and Susana Malcorra, Head of Field Support, were present at vigil.
Earlier today, Ban, Leroy and Malcorra met several Haitian staff working at the UN headquarters. Ban told them that he plans to visit Haiti on this Sunday (17 January) to show his solidarity with the people of Haiti and UN staff, and to assess the humanitarian assistance effort and the scale of the disaster for himself.
He assured the staff that the UN will do all that it can to help the people of Haiti. Speaking after Ban, Malcorra added that the UN has a dual responsibility in this crisis – to serve the Haitian people and get its country team back on its feet to deliver what the Haitian people demand.
