Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived today in Haiti to visit the mission headquarters (MINUSTAH) devastated by Tuesday’s earthquake and to express solidarity to distraught UN staff and Haitian people.

Ban was met at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport by his newly appointed head of mission Edmond Mulet and other UN officials.

Ban toured the ruins of what had been the five-story headquarters building with Mulet, who briefed him on the operation being carried out by the rescue team.

Ban also visited the destroyed government palace accompanied by former spokesperson Michelle Montas. There they took the opportunity to liaise with local survivors who saluted him warmly.

Later, at a press conference, Ban told journalists that despite the immense tragedy that had befallen on the Haitian people and the personnel of MINUSTAH, the mission was ably assisting the Haitian government in maintaining peace and security in the country.

He also took the opportunity to offer his, “great respect and admiration” to all the members of the international community who had arrived to Haiti ’s assistance.

As rescue teams worked tirelessly trying to dig out staff trapped under the rubble, Ban shared a personal impression of how he had seen in the faces of people, the determination to overcome this catastrophe.

Accompanying Ban on his trip was the organizations emergency relief coordinator, John Holmes. He said Haitian appeared to be calm, rational but desperate for help. “They’re desperate for water and food and I’ve been trying to assure them that it’s coming, it’s coming.”
