Storyline

Just 20 miles west of the capital, the city of Leogane with a population of approximately 134,000 was one of the worst affected by last week’s devastating earthquake, which caused massive damage to the city’s homes roads and infrastructure.

Initial estimates indicate that 80 to 90 percent of the buildings were heavily damaged.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Pierre Hug, Local Government Representative from Leogane:
"We haven't made a full evaluation. But we can say that at least 80% of the city is gone."

According to the local police, up to 10,000 people have been killed and most bodies are still inside the collapsed structures. No local government or infrastructure remains in place.

While much of the attention has been focused on the capital, providing aid to these outlaying areas has proven an extremely difficult task.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Napoleon Adieu, Victim from Leogane:
"The authorities are also wounded. We have a little food, but so far, no one has been able to come to our aid."

Authorities say they have buried about 1,300 people mostly in mass graves. The city lacks heavy machinery to lift the rubble and get to the bodies or possible survivors.

As the days go by, desperation and frustration are setting in and tensions are rising.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Francois Berzon, Victim from Leogane:
"We lost everything, my house, all of it. We are surviving by sharing among the neighbors, that's all."

The World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing distribution of high energy biscuits to 50,000 people in Leogane as well as Cite Soleil, Carrefour, Place Boyer, Champ de Mars and Jacmel. The WFP Port-au-Prince metropolitan area schools feeding programme is now being used serve 50,000 affected people with hot meals.

A joint UNDAC/EU/WFP rapid assessment was undertaken in Carrefour, Gressier and Leogane on 15 January. Road access between Port-au-Prince and Leogane was reported to be good with minor blockages.
