The UN's largest peace-keeping operation, the African Union and United Nation Mission Darfur (UNAMID, today observed a moement of silence to honor the lives of their colleagues, friends and family who died during the earthquake in Haiti.
Attending the solemn town-hall meeting, the mission senior leadership led personnel from military, police and civilian components, where they expressed deep sorrow at the devastation caused by the tragedy.
Acting Joint Special representative Henry Anyidoho said the mission was ready to deploy equipment, personnel and other assistance to assist their sister mission in Haiti.

"We have packed equipment and are on stand-by just to get the signal to fly to Haiti."
From the civilian substantive sections, more than 600 individuals in the mission have expressed voluntary willingness, to be included on a roster for probable temporary deployment to Haiti. The staff includes both international and local staff serving in Dafur.
If selected, the staff from Darfur will join their colleagues in Haiti, working in areas of recovery return and reintegration, violence reduction, logistics, public information and other sections.
Among the individuals who submitted his name for duty in Haiti, was a local Darfurian UN driver, Faiz Saeed.
The driver told UNTV that even though the tragedy in Haiti was of a natural cause; the suffering of people is affecting everybody in the world.

UNAMID has also created an internal special account to collect funds known as the UNAMID Haiti Fund. The contributions by staff will be forwarded to victims and families of those who lost their lives.
