“It became clear today that the Geneva discussions, and the results achieved during these, have contributed to the stabilization of the South Caucuses, where over the last 9 months of 2009 there has not been a single loss of life, something that is very important and positive, but problems do remain and these relate to the high level of mistrust."

"This round of Geneva discussions really was extremely difficult. I would say more difficult than we got used to in the previous rounds – primarily because of the Russian position presented by the co-chairs regarding the security and the stability inside the occupied territories and the whole of Georgia.”

The 9th round of the talks between Russia and Georgia took place today in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, The European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The Georgian delegation was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Giorgi Bokeria and the Russian delegation by the Director of Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Grigory Karasin.
The talks aimed at restoring stability in the region following the conflict between the two countries that escalated in August 2008.
The head of the Russian Delegation Grigory Karasin said that it had became clear that the Geneva discussions had contributed to the stabilization of the South Caucuses where over the last 9 months of 2009 there had not been a single loss of life. This is something he defined as “very important and positive.”
Still Karasin noted that problems did remain and that there was a “high level of mistrust."
Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Giorgi Bokeria said that the round of Geneva discussions had been “extremely difficult,” because of the Russian position presented by the co-chairs regarding the security and the stability inside the occupied territories and the whole of Georgia.
The next round of the meeting will be held on 30th March 2010.
