Storyline

Three and half weeks after a magnitude 7 quake rocked the capital port au prince, Haiti’s Louverture international airport never sleeps. Flights full of supplies arrive 24 hours a day and leave empty. A massive aid effort is underway catering to the hundreds of thousands left homeless by the quake.

Foye Zanmi Jezi Missionnaire Sacre-Coeur, an interim care center for children in Lilavois, Port au Prince was destroyed by the quake. The 90 orphaned and vulnerable children who lived here now cram into three tents set up on the grounds of their school. It too was destroyed. Sister Marlene Joseph, the director of the center is distraught.

“For us it’s very difficult, we have no money”

I ask her if she has hope for the centre

A desperately needed truck of UNICEF supplies arrives at the centre. Sister Joseph hands out sandals, clothes, blankets, mattresses, toothbrushes, and other supplies. Two ‘schools in a box’ containing toys, games and books will be distributed later. Many of the children lost all they owned in the rubble.

SOUNDBITE (French) St-Anne Roger, 16 years old:
“I lost my clothes, everything is gone, I was supposed to write exams this year and all my papers are gone, my school is destroyed, my dormitory is destroyed, so I’m happy to receive everything I’ve been given today.”

The needs are overwhelming but so is the support. Nearly four weeks after the quake, massive shipments of aid continue to arrive and UNICEF and its partners will continue to ensure they reach those most in need. Lives depend on it.
