“I don’t have any doubt that the people of Sudan in the north and south are very eager to join in with the Carter Center and other national observers to make sure that the elections is safe and fair and free and transparent. So I have confidence in the people of Sudan to ensure that the elections is fare and honest.”

“I believe sincerely that everyone in Sudan having suffered from over twenty five years of horrible war are dedicated to preventing any other outbreak of violence. But these will be intensely competitive elections with a lot at steak and I don’t think there is any doubt that there will be some confrontation in the remote areas and I hope it does not expand.”

Former United States (US) President Jimmy Carter said he hoped the upcoming elections in Sudan will be successful and appealed for peace and stability in Sudan as it prepares for its first multi-party elections in 24 years.
Carter, who is on a four-day visit to the country, said that he is deeply committed to making sure that the April elections go forward as fair, free, transparent and safe in the north and south.

The Carter Center has been the only international monitoring body in Sudan throughout election preparations, but it will be joined by the European Union, China , South Africa and the African Union for the voting period in April.
Carter arrived in Juba on Wednesday (10 Feb) where he met with the President of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit. They discussed the progress of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the upcoming elections. He also had a similar meeting with President Omer Hassan Al Bashir in Khartoum. With the upcoming elections security and conflict are a major concern.

He said that he would return to Sudan for the April election with his wife and a team of Carter Center observers. While in Juba , he is scheduled to meet other political leaders.
The general elections which are scheduled to take place from April 11-18 are aimed at electing the President of Sudan and the National Assembly of Sudan . The election brings to the end the transitional period which began when the decades-long Sudanese civil war which ended in 2005. The April poll will be the first genuine multi-party national elections since 1986.
