Storyline

The Joint Special Representative (JSR) of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) paid his first visit to one of the internally displaced persons communities in the region on Monday.

Ibrahim Gambari sat down with the Sheikhs and Umdas (traditional community leaders), women’s groups and youth leaders in Zam Zam camp, located 17 kilometers south of El Fasher, North Darfur.

The JSR informed the camp’s representatives that he came to listen to their concerns firsthand. He reaffirmed his commitment and support to help bringing peace to Darfur and enhancing the security of civilians and IDPs.

A youth leader at the camp, expressed concerns about returning home from the camp given the unstable security situation in Darfur.

As part of improving UNAMID’s capacity to provide security for the IDPs, Gambari talked about the five MI-35 tactical helicopters that UNAMID will receive from Ethiopia on February 25. The helicopters will largely be used for troop deployment and monitoring the security situation in Darfur.

“I will work with you. I seek your support. I seek your cooperation. Together we will work for peace. We’ll work for stability so that the schools, the health facilities, the jobs, the employment opportunities will come and address all your concerns as soon as possible,” he said.

At the end of his visit, Gambari presented 3,000 text books to the head Umda to be distributed to schools in the Zam Zam area.

“I cannot come and go empty-handed so I’m not going to be empty handed. I want to assure the youth that you can consider me one of the sponsors of your youth club here in the Zam Zam camp, ” he said.

The JSR informed that he would travel to Doha, Qatar to witness the signing of the agreement on cessation of hostilities between the Sudanese Government and the Justice and Equality Movement. He added that he would ensure that the concerns of IDPs were raised.
