The UN Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief said that his agency, “cannot confirm that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities,” and called on the country to “take steps towards the full implementation of its Safeguards Agreement” as a matter of high priority.
Addressing the IAEA 35- nation Board of Governors meeting in Vienna today, Director-General Yukiya Amano reported on the implementation of nuclear safeguards in Iran and Syria urging the countries to cooperate with the agency.
He urged Iran to cooperate in areas including the implementation of resolutions by both the IAEA and the Security Council, as well as clarification of issues related to the possible military dimensions to its nuclear programme.
On Syria, he said that the agency has been unable to verify nuclear activities in Dair Alzour and other locations since June 2008 when the country failed to cooperate with the agency.
Amano, who took up his four-year post as chief of the agency in December, also touched on nuclear energy, nuclear safety and cancer control.
The Board meets five times a year at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna to discuss the agency’s work on nuclear verification, safety, security and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
