About a thousand women celebrated International Women’s Day at the Haitian Ministry of Feminine Condition in Port au Prince. The crowd welcomed special guest Governor General of Canada, Michaelle Jean, on her first visit to Haiti since the 12 January earthquake that leveled parts of the country.
Present at the ceremony were the Haitian Minister of Feminine Condition and the Mayor of Port au Prince, as well as women survivors of the earthquake. The Memory of those lost brought tears to Jean and her Canadian delegation, including the Mayor of Montreal, Gerald Tramblay.
SOUNDBITE (Creole) Michaelle Jean, General Governor of Canada:
”Haitian women carry the burden of the country on their heads. They carry the future of the country in their stomach. We know that no valid reconstruction can happen without the implication of women. If they are not part of that process, it will fail."
Aware of the impact of her presence, Jean also addressed the audience in English, reminding the world of the burden of women.
SOUNDBITE (English) Michelle Jean, General Governor of Canada:
“It is women who have to find food and water, while caring for the children and the survivors. And it is women who are the most subject to violence including sexual violence.”
Dancing and clapping hands like a pop star, Jean invited the crowded to cheer.
Yesterday, hundreds of women gathered at the same location singing and praying at a remembrance ceremony for the deceased women organized by the Ministry of Feminine Condition.
SOUNDBITE (Creole) Marjorie Michel, Minister of Feminine Condition:
“During that day of 12 January 2010, the feminist movement was hurt. It was to the bone. However the way has already been drafted, thank to many other women who are committed to hold the flame high.”
In a separate ceremony today, Haitian Partners for Christian development certified 35 women for entrepreneurship in the areas at risk of Martissant and Cite Soleil of Port au Prince.
This graduation came at the conclusion of a several month training sponsored by MINUSTAH.
